How to Jump Start a Car

It's all too easy to get in your vehicle and discover the battery is dead after the lights were accidentally left on or as a result of cold weather and an aging battery. Being able to get it started again is a good skill to have in any driver's repertoire.

Keep a set of jumper cables in your car at all times. Line up the car with another and place both in neutral, with the good car's engine turned off. Place the positive jumper clamp on the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other on the positive terminal of the good battery. Place a negative clamp on the negative terminal of the good battery. Be careful; the cable is now live. Place the last negative clamp on a metal, non-moving part of the engine. Start the good car first, then start the car with the dead battery.
